Boarding Schools in Massachusetts

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, or simply Massachusetts, is the 6th state of the United States. It is located in New England, a region in the northeastern corner of the United States that also consist of six other states: Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Massachusetts is one of the earliest English settlements in North America, and thus, one of the very first states to be admitted into the union from the date of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Pilgrims, who were among the first English settlers, established a settlement which would become Plymouth in 1620. The Puritans established the Massachusetts Bay Colony at present-day Boston a decade later, in 1630.

Due to the several large bays that shape its coast, Massachusetts is sometimes called the Bay State. To the east there is Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod Bay, to the south is Buzzards Bay. Its capital and the largest city is Boston, one of the oldest cities of the United States and regarded as the "Capital of New England" due to its cultural and economic importance.

Although the climate of Massachusetts is classified as humid continental, the state has its share of extreme weather, prone to northeaster storms and severe winter storms.

Boston is renowned worldwide and the center for medicine, biotechnology and health care technology. The colleges and universities in Boston have a significant impact on the state economy, contributing an estimated $4 billion to the city's economy annually.

Massachusetts is among the states in the United States that have a well developed educational system. It was the first state to pass the Massachusetts Education Law of 1647 which required municipalities to establish schools as the first step toward compulsory public education in the country. The state is home to several of the country's oldest education institutions: The Mather School, founded in 1639, is the country's oldest public elementary school; Boston Latin School, founded in 1635, is the oldest high school; The Governor's Academy, founded in 1763, is the oldest boarding school,;
Harvard University, founded in 1636, is the oldest college; and Mount Holyoke College, founded in 1837, is the oldest women's college.

In 2007, Massachusetts scored highest of all the states in math on the National Assessments of Educational Progress. Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), both located in Cambridge, are world renowned colleges that consistently rank among the world's finest universities.
