Boarding Schools in Maryland

Maryland is the 7th state of the United States. It is located in the Mid Atlantic region of the United States, sharing borders with Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, the District of Columbia to its south and west, Delaware to its east, and Pennsylvania to its north. It is the 42nd largest and the 9th smallest state, comparable in size to Hawaii.

Its official nickname is Old Line State, which is, according to some historians, a reference to the American soldiers who fought in the 18th century Revolutionary War.
Maryland was the only state that had regular troops that George Washington referred to as soldiers of "The Old Line".

Due to its possession of a wider variety of topography compared to the rest of the states, Maryland is also nicknamed the "America in Miniature". Maryland has arid sand dunes with interspersed with sparse seagrass in the east, pine groves in the mountains and gently rolling hills of oak forest in the Piedmont Region in the west, and low marshlands teeming with wildlife and large bald cypress near the bay in the south.

Maryland has a wide variety of climates because of several factors: its proximity to water, down slope winds providing shelter from northern cold weather, and local variances in elevation. The eastern half of Maryland has a subtropical weather, with hot summers and mild to cool winters. The Piedmont region shares the same characteristics although it sometimes transition to a subtropical highland zone. In western Maryland, the weather is generally mild summers and cool, snowy winters due to higher elevations.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Maryland households are currently the wealthiest in the country, with a 2009 median household income of $69,272. Due to a strong economy, the educational system in Maryland is among the highly developed in the U.S. Owing to its significance in the U.S. history, Maryland has several historic and prominent public and private schools in the country, with the most prominent being the Johns Hopkins University which was founded in 1876.

Maryland's public education system was ranked first in the U.S. in 2012 for four consecutive years, according to Education Week and from the College Board for Advanced Placement performance. In 2008, Maryland had led the U.S. in the percentage of students passing the AP exams, with 23.4% students passing in the AP tests in May 2008.
