Iowa is the 29th state of the United States of America. It is located in the Midwestern United States, along with 12 other states that compose the official definition of the American Midwest. Iowa is the only state whose east and west borders are formed entirely by rivers: the Mississippi River to the east and the Missouri River and the Big Sioux River to the west. North of the state is Minnesota and to the south is Missouri. Iowa's capital and largest city is Des Moines.
Like most of the Midwest states, Iowa has a humid continental climate that can alternate between extremes of hot and cold. Harsh winters are relatively common.
Being one of the "Corn Belt" states, Iowa is often referred to as the "Food Capital of the World". As of 2010, Iowa is one of the top four corn producing states in the country, along with Illinois, Nebraska, and Minnesota. Its popular culture is of a lifestyle based on ownership of several hectares of family owned farms, with supporting small towns acting as hub where people usually meet. However, although agriculture has always been a major component of the state's economy, it only contributes 3.5% of the state's gross state product. Its biggest economic sector is manufacturing, with several of the world most renowned brand names, such as General Mills, Quaker Oats, ConAgra Foods, Wells Blue Bunny and Heinz, are found there. There are also biotechnology, finance and insurance services, and government services that contribute substantially to the state economy
Iowa has always been strong in its education system, often credited to start the high school movement in the United States around 1910. The graduation rate for high school students is 87.2 % which is among the highest in the country. Its students rank continuously within the top 3 for ACT and SAT scores. In 2009, Iowa was leading the nation for average SAT scores per student, second best in the nation for average ACT scores per student
