Boarding Schools in Illinois

Illinois is the 21st state of the United States of America. It is located in the vast central land area of the country known as the American Midwest which also consists of 11 other states: Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Illinois is bordered by Indiana to the east, the Lake Michigan to the northeast, Kentucky to the southeast, Missouri to the west, and Iowa to the northwest.

Typical to the heartland regions, Illinois is made entirely of broad expanse of flat land, with much of it covered in prairie, steppe and grassland. The Illinois River bisects the state it two halves. Due to its geography, mainly without mountains or bodies of water that significantly affect weather, the state has a humid continental climate with large temperature extremes. During winter season, the weather is primarily influenced by the cold Arctic air coming down from northern territories. In summer, the weather is influenced by the warm, humid air blown from the Gulf of Mexico.

Although Springfield is the capital city of the state, Chicago is its largest city, the third most populous city of the country, and undoubtedly the most recognizable city of the state. The metropolitan area of Chicago is home to several multinational Fortune 500 companies, including McDonalds, Motorola, Boeing and United Airlines. It is also the home of the largest futures exchange in the world, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Illinois has a well developed educational system, due to productive investments in the prior decades. As such, of the eleven national universities of the state, five of these rank within the top quartile, or within the top 50 of the Top 500 National Universities in the United States, as determined by the U.S. News & World Report rankings.
